Improving Sustainability the Easy Way

We are all being asked to consider the environment in our everyday lives and to continually improve the sustainability of the goods and services we offer.

Until recently the opportunities to produce components, packaging, containers etc with an improvement in sustainability has relied on either using recycled material – which most businesses are using as much as they dare; reducing weight without reducing performance or exploring the bio route with its uncertainties and cost implications.

Bioresins.EU a division of A&O Filmpac have been trialling a new and simpler method of improving the sustainable contents for moulded and thermoformed parts with their New Bio material PHA.

Instead of the all or nothing approach of previous Bio offerings aimed at gaining Compostable certification, Bioresins have been able to show that its PHA can be simply added to a base material such as PP or PE in quantities of upto 30% at the hopper or through a twin feed system without the need to compound.

The results have shown that material performance is unaffected, cycle times and lines speeds remain the same and due to the pure nature of PHA you get a direct improvement in sustainable content i.e. if you add 10% PHA you get a 10% Sustainable content in the part produced add 20% PHA add you get a 20% sustainable content.

The key issues for processors are that they can continue to use their existing materials, including slip and colours etc and can feed in the PHA either through a dry pre mix or through a twin feed system.
